Our Expert Guide will take us two explore both of Bogota's biggest tourist attractions in one fun-filled day!
Our first stop will Zipaquira to visit the famous Salt Cathedral. Inside a salt mine tunnel, 180 meters underground, you find the 12 Stations of the Cross (The Passion of the Christ), plus numerous chapels and auditoriums which make up this magnificent cathedral. You will also enjoy the site's newest attractions, such as its light reflecting pool, a gift shop, and an interesting 3D film about the construction of the salt mine.
Afterward's we'll head to Guatavita Lagoon to discover the legend of El Dorado as we hike around the lagoon. Guatavita Lagoon is where the legend of El Dorado originates, the mystical "golden city" sought by early Spanish explorers. This legend is not entirely fiction, since the native Muisca people held ceremonies using gold and emeralds on the lake, which they considered sacred. We will hike to the top of the crater and explore the history of the ancient Muisca people, their customs, religion, and way of life from pre-Colombian times to the present. Although the lake is found above 9,000 feet, the hike is not strenuous. The trail winds through a forest of exotic flora and fauna, offering breathtaking views of the Andean highlands framed with wildflowers. Our hike culminates at the top of the mountain, with a Muisca ritual at sunset.
